Got aviation training already? Show your stuff.

You can request proficiency credit for aviation courses if you meet the Institute of Aviation’s requirements.

Private Pilot I & II
A student admitted to Parkland with a FAA private pilot certificate will enroll in

  • ALV 120 (one credit)
  • ALV 121 (two credits)

Upon successful completion of these, you’ll receive six proficiency credits for AVI 101 and AVI 120 and may proceed to the next course.

If you’ve received flight training, but haven’t attained an FAA private pilot certificate, you’re not eligible to attempt to earn credit for AVI 101 or AVI 120.

Instrument Rating I & II

A student admitted to Parkland with a FAA instrument rating will be required to take

  • AVI 140 end-of-course test (both oral and flight portions) with the Chief Pilot or designee and pass

Upon successful completion, you’ll receive six proficiency credits for AVI 129 and AVI 140 and may proceed to the next course.

If you’ve received training in instrument rating but haven’t attained an FAA instrument rating certification, you’re not eligible to attempt to earn credit for AVI 129 or AVI 140 by proficiency examination.

Commercial Pilot I & II

A student admitted to Parkland with a FAA commercial pilot certificate must enroll in

  • AVI 209

Upon successful completion, you’ll receive three proficiency credits for AVI 200 and may proceed to the next course.

If you’ve received flight training at the commercial level but haven’t attained an FAA commercial pilot certificate, you’re not eligible to attempt to earn credit for AVI 200 by proficiency examination.

Policy Notes

The above criteria for aviation proficiency credits fall under Parkland College’s policy for granting proficiency credits. All Parkland students must fulfill the following conditions in order to attempt to earn credits by proficiency examination:

  • Be enrolled currently at Parkland College
  • Not have attempted to earn credit previously by examination in the same course
  • Not have completed the course previously with an A, B, C, D, F, N, T, or W grade

The Institute of Aviation Petition for Credit by Examination (Proficiency) form must be completed by the student and the Institute of Aviation director.

Costs of attaining proficiency credit for aviation courses:

  • Processing fee: $10 per credit
  • Additional flight fees: Included in the cost of registering for ALV 120 and AVI 209. You’ll be required to pay for the flight time needed to complete the AVI 140 end-of-course test.

Each level of proficiency is considered individually and must be earned separately. Attaining proficiency at a higher level does not include earning proficiency for a lower level. Students seeking more than one level of proficiency are advised to begin with the lower/lowest level.
